4. William Regal’s Drug Troubles Stalled WWE Career For Years
While his on-screen character is the epitome of sophistication, William Regal has dealt with his fair share of demons over the years. He’s said that he doesn’t remember much of his early stint in WWE due to an addiction to prescription painkillers, and his autobiography is a stark look into the life of an addict.
Regal was initially released from WWE due to his addictions in April 1999, and after a brief return to WCW, he came back to WWF in good health and good spirits to assume the role of the villainous commissioner. He became a staple of WWE programming, and after nearly a decade of service, seemed ready to step into the main event after winning King of the Ring. Unfortunately, addiction is a lifelong struggle, and Regal failed a drug test for the second time in his career, and was suspended for sixty days.
These days, William Regal is one of Triple H’s most trusted men backstage, and the on-screen GM of NXT, but his fans often wonder what it would have been like if he were champion.
